City lights on the water

After the swimming pool and the gym (I will make an entry about it tomorrow), we go to the park again. It is still hot like the inside of the oven, but the trees around the skywalk are protecting us somewhat from the scorching sun. Somewhat. And we see a Nessie again J

As the sun goes down, the colours appear and it is quite beautiful in the park. Marcin says at some point in a bit as if a unicorn vomited a rainbow, but these intense pastels are to my liking.

Po basenie i siłowni (wpis o tym jutro) znowu udajemy się do parku. Nadal jest gorąco jak w piekarniku, ale drzewa wokół drogi na rampie nieco nas chronią przed palącym słońcem. Nieco. I znowu widzimy Nessie J

Kiedy słońce chyli się ku horyzontowi, w parku z każdej strony wypełzaja kolory. Marcin, apoteoza romantyzmu, mówi w pewnym momencie, ze jest tak, jakby jednorożec właśnie rzygnął tęczą, ale te intensywne pastele mi się bardzo podobają.

Then it becomes dark and the lights of sky scrapper reflect in the lake and the temperature drops a little – it is still very warm but pleasant.

Potem robi się ciemno, światła wiezowcow zaczynają odbijać się w jeziorze i temperatura trochę spada – nadal jest bardzo ciepło, ale bardzo przyjemnie. Optymalna temperatura dla mnie.

We walk back to the hotel but this time we go below the skywalk, as the streets are now full of people selling street food or having their dinner and chatting around and it is nice to be a part of this commotion.  (the pictures below are from iPhone, thus the lower quality).

Wracamy pomału do hotelu, ale tym razem schodzimy pod rampę, gdyż ulice są teraz pełne ludzi sprzedających jedzenie lub jedzących obiad, albo zwyczajnie odpoczywających po pracy przy pogawędce z sąsiadami, i miło jest być częścią tego zamieszania. (zdjecia ponizej są z telefonu, stąd słaba jakość)

Benchakitti Park

Our plan for this evening includes night shoots of the Benchakitti Park. We decide to scout it now so that we can know what to expect later. It is about 30 minutes walk from our hotel and majority of this walk is on a lovely skywalk. We pass the busy highway and from now on, the closer we are to the park the greener it is.

Nasz plan na ten wieczór obejmuje nocne zdjęcia Parku Benchakitti. Idziemy wiec sobie obcykać ten park, żeby później wiedzieć, czego się spodziewać. Do parku mamy około 30 minut spacerem od naszego hotelu, a większość drogi jest na specjalnie zbudowanej dla przechodniów i rowerzystów rampie. Mijamy ruchliwą autostradę i od tej pory im bliżej parku, tym jest bardziej wszystko jest zielone.

It is as if a jungle decided to enter the city, and Bangkok is always full of contrasts. Big, relatively modern houses and hotels are interspersed by small dwellings from wood or even corrugated tin.

Zaczyna być tak, jakby do miasta zdecydowała się wkroczyć dżungla. Bangkok, jak zawsze, jest pełen kontrastów. Duże, stosunkowo nowoczesne domy i hotele przeplatają się z małymi domkami z drewna, a nawet ruderami z blachy falistej.

As we walk alongside a river we suddenly spot a Nessie. I look transfixed at the giant lizard swimming slowly through green waters, like a tiny dinosaur. Soon we will learn that it is a monitor lizard and they are often seen in the park area.

Monitors are some of the world’s biggest lizards and they can grow up to around two metres long and weigh up to 50 kilograms. Water monitor lizards have forked tongues (look carefully at the video clip, and you will notice it at one point), scaly skin, powerful legs, and strong tails. They are carnivores, eating rodents, snakes, fish, birds, and whatever else they can find, including carrion. They do not try to attack people unprovoked (They will be nasty if people try to harm them. But then, who wouldn’t be?).

The sound at the beginning of the video clip is our recording of cicadas.

Idąc wzdłuż rzeki, nagle dostrzegamy Nessie. Patrzymy zafascynowani na olbrzymią jaszczurkę płynącą powoli przez zielone wody, niczym mały dinozaur. Wkrótce dowiemy się, że to odmiana waranów i często widuje się je na terenie wokół parku.

Warany te to jedne z największych jaszczurek na świecie i mogą dorastać do około dwóch metrów długości i ważyć do 50 kilogramów. Warany mają rozwidlony język (widać to w którymś momencie na video clipie poniżej), pokrytą łuskami skórę, mocne nogi i mocne ogony. Są mięsożercami, jedzą gryzonie, węże, ryby, ptaki i wszystko inne, co mogą znaleźć, w tym padlinę. Nie próbują atakować ludzi bez sprowokowania (ale zaatakowane będą agresywne, kto by nie był).

Dźwięk na początku filmiku to nagrane przez nas po drodze do parku cykady.

Part of the park is closed for rebuilding but the beautiful lake surrounded by the tall iconic buildings is accessible. We stroll around, take some pictures, play in between water sprinklers, and then go back to the hotel and have enough time for a gym session and swimming pool laziness before we return to the park for evening shoots.

Część parku jest zamknięta z powodu przebudowy, ale piękne jezioro otoczone wysokimi kultowymi budynkami jest dostępne. Spacerujemy wzdłuż jeziora, robimy zdjęcia, ganiamy między zraszaczami, a potem wracamy do hotelu i mamy jeszcze wystarczająco dużo czasu żeby zrobić trening na siłowni i pozwolić sobie na lenistwo na basenie, zanim wrócimy do parku na wieczorną sesję.

Conrad Bangkok

Even though we arrived at the hotel very early, we did not have to wait for our room long. The staff was very efficient and friendly and they sorted out our check-in without a hassle. Conrad is sleek and modern, pleasantly cool and rather comfortable. Our room was spacious enough, the view from the big windows (also in the bathroom) was especially pleasant at night when the big city lights were on. I tend to pick my hotels very carefully, but Conrad managed to exceed my expectations a bit.  A good start to our adventure.

Mimo, że dotarliśmy do hotelu bardzo wcześnie, nie musieliśmy długo czekać na nasz pokój. Personel był bardzo sprawny i przyjazny i załatwili nasze zameldowanie w trymiga. Conrad jest elegancki i nowoczesny, przyjemnie chłodny i raczej wygodny. Nasz pokój był wystarczająco przestronny, widok z dużych okien (również w łazience) był szczególnie przyjemny w nocy, gdy na zewnątrz świeciły już światła wielkiego miasta. Zwykle wybieram nasze hotele nieprzypadkowo, wiec moje oczekiwania są dość wysokie, ale Conradowi udało się je nieco przewyższyć. Zaczyna się zatem znakomicie…

Rhinefield House Hotel

We have visited Rhinefield House Hotel on a few occasions, as it is located in a beautiful spot of New Forest, not far from the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, notable for its giant redwood trees.

Rhinefield House Hotel odwiedzilśmy już kilka razy, ponieważ znajduje się on w pięknym miejscu w New Forest, niedaleko od Rhinefield Ornamental Drive wyróżniającej się gigantycznymi sekwojami.

This time we came to check some locations for future photoshoots with models in a nearby area, so we decided to book an afternoon tea in the hotel as well.

It is not the cheapest treat, but they try to do it relatively posh. There is a lot of food, and it is rather nice, too.

Tym razem przyjechaliśmy sprawdzić kilka miejsc w New Forest na przyszłe sesje zdjęciowe, więc postanowiliśmy przy okazji zarezerwować również afternoon tea w hotelu. Nie jest to najtańsza opcja, ale trzeba przyznać, ze Rhinefield House stara się zrobić to dość szykownie. Jedzenia jest naprawdę dużo i jest dobre.

We also popped in to their beautiful Alhambra room, a replica of the one of Grenada-based palace interiors, decorated with Persian onyx, copper, Venetian glass and mosaics.

Zajrzeliśmy także do ich przepięknej sali Alhambra, repliki jednego z wnętrz słynnego Hiszpańskiego pałacu, ozdobionej perskim onyksem, miedzią, weneckim szkłem i mozaikami.

The Water of Leith

Time to burn a small fraction of the calories from the afternoon tea. We decided to go to the Water of Leith Walkway and stroll down the river from Leith to the Dean Village. On the way to the river, we pass a huge mural taking the whole side of the building at North Junction Street. It supposedly depicts Leith's historic connection with the sea.

Czas spalić niewielki ułamek kalorii z afternoon tea. Postanowiliśmy udać się do trasy znanej jako ”Water of Leith”  i dojść spacerem do Dean Village. W drodze do rzeki mijamy ogromny mural zajmujący całą ścianę budynku przy North Junction Street. Mural ten przedstawia historyczne połączenie dzielnicy Leith z morzem.

 The Water of Leith Walkway is designated as an Urban Wildlife Site, and as expected, there is a lot of greenery around.

Water of Leith Walkway posiada status „Urban Wildlife Site” (miejski obszar dzikiej przyrody) wiec zgodnie z oczekiwaniami znajdujemy dużo zieleni.

As we walk, we do not always stick to the river.  In some sections we stroll through the new-town streets of Edinburgh, admiring its beautiful houses. There is one particularly worth attention - the Cactus House on the Henderson Row. The owners of this house adorn the front entrance with peculiar cactus display. Just look at the huge armchair all covered in succulents!

Podczas naszego spaceru nie trzymamy się jednak kurczowo rzeki. Na niektórych odcinkach spacerujemy po ulicach nowego miasta, podziwiając jego naprawdę piękną architekturę. Na dłuższą chwilę zatrzymujemy się przy  Kaktusowy Domu na Henderson Row. Właściciele tej posesji ozdobili frontowe wejście osobliwą wystawą kaktusów. Popatrzcie tylko na ogromny fotel pokryty sukulentami!

At the Stockbridge some nice passers-by make us look down the bridge to see a statue in the water.

Kiedy docieramy do Stockbridge para miłych przechodniów każe nam spojrzeć w dół mostu, aby zobaczyć stojący w wodzie posąg.

We pass the impressive (single span across the river) stone bridge from 1824  - St Bernard’s Bridge. The steps and added archways were built in 1887. Not long from here, we get to the St Bernard’s well. The Well (really a pumphouse) is built in form of a classical-style temple with ten Doric columns surrounding the statue of the Greek goddess of health Hygeia.  The natural spring that starts here was rumoured by the locals to have health-giving properties.

Mijamy okazały (jedno przęsło przez rzekę) kamienny most z 1824 roku – most św. Bernarda. Schody i dodatkowe łuki zostały zbudowane w 1887 roku. Kilka chwil później docieramy do studni św. Bernarda. Studnia (a właściwie pompownia) jest zbudowana w formie świątyni w stylu klasycznym z dziesięcioma kolumnami doryckimi otaczającymi posąg greckiej bogini zdrowia Hygei. Wieść gminna niesie, że źródło, które się tutaj znajduje miało mieć właściwości zdrowotne.

In the small park on the site of Lindsay’s Mill, we stop to check on the three mills stones. These are not the traditional locally quarried millstones but much more sturdy ones, made from imported French quartz. When grain became cheaper to import from America, it was much drier than local grain so they needed a tougher stone.

W małym parku na terenie Lindsay’s Mill zatrzymujemy się, aby obejrzeć trzy kamienie młyńskie. Nie są to tradycyjne kamienie z lokalnie wydobywanego surowca, ale znacznie mocniejsze, wykonane z importowanego francuskiego kwarcu. Kiedy import zboża z Ameryki stał się tańszy, docierające tu zboże był znacznie suchsze i twardsze niż zboże lokalne, więc potrzebne był także twardsze kamienie.

Jeśli chodzi o zdjecie to efekt niezamierzony, proszę winić fotografa, że nie patrzył co foci. ..;)

The most impressive bridge above the local river – the Dean Bridge - was designed and engineered by Thomas Telford, and was built in 1830. It is difficult to photograph it well due to the foliage around it.

Najbardziej imponujący most nad tutejszą rzeką – Dean Bridge – został zaprojektowany i wykonany przez Thomasa Telforda i został zbudowany w 1830 roku. Trudno go dobrze sfotografować ze względu na otaczającą go roślinność.

And so we are in the Dean Village, once a busy industrial place with hydro-powered mills to produce the city’s supplies of paper, fabric, and flour. It was home to 8 grain mills, a brewery, a distillery, chemical works, and a skin factory. The weather suddenly changes and it starts to rain so we grab the uber from here to go back to our hotel.

I tak dotarliśmy do Dean Village, niegdyś ważnego centrum przemysłowego z elektrowniami wodnymi, które umożliwiały produkcję papieru, tkanin i mąki. Mieściło się tu 8 młynów zbożowych, browar, gorzelnia, zakłady chemiczne i fabryka skór. Pogoda nagle się zmienia i zaczyna padać, więc łapiemy ubera i wracamy do hotelu.
