Walking Street

After the cabaret we are off for dinner but first, we walk through the famous Walking Street. It is out of the season (or rather in a shoulder season) in Pattaya, and soon after pandemic so the street is quieter than it tends to normally be in the summer, but it is probably for the best. Not all the neon lights are on but there are enough and the music blasts from some venues. I think I would find it a bit suffocating in high season.

We stroll down along about 1km-long street and on the other side catch the taxi to our restaurant.

Po kabarecie wybieramy się na kolację, ale najpierw idziemy słynną Walking Street. W Pattaya jesteśmy poza sezonem (a raczej w sezonie przejściowym) i zaraz po pandemii, więc ulica jest cichsza niż zwykle w lecie, ale to chyba nawet lepiej. Nie wszystkie neony się świecą, ale jest ich wystarczająco dużo, a w niektórych miejscach słychać głośną muzykę. Myślę, że w sezonie byłoby to trochę przytłaczające. Spacerujemy tą ulicą przez około 1 km i na jej drugim końcu łapiemy taksówkę do naszej restauracji.

Alcazar

Pattaya is world famous for flamboyant cabarets, and Alcazar is one of the most eminent of them. Their show is a full-scale theatrical event with lavish costumes, fantastic light effects, and great music. There are aspects of comedy, drama, and dance performance. It is inspired by music and cultures from all over the world:  traditional Thai, Western, Bollywood and even K-pop. Alcazar clearly lives by the rule “go big or go home”. Obviously, Thailand cabarets are also famous for katoey (which loosely translates to lady-boys, and this term is used in a respectful way here). And the show itself makes a lot of hints to it.

Pattaya słynie na całym świecie z ekstrawaganckich kabaretów, a Alcazar jest jednym z najbardziej znanych. Ich przedstawienie to pełnowymiarowe wydarzenie teatralne z bogatymi kostiumami, fantastycznymi efektami świetlnymi i świetną muzyką. Łączy ono w sobie aspekty komedii, dramatu i występów tanecznych. Fragmenty przedstawienia inspirowane są muzyką i kulturami z całego świata: tradycyjną tajską, zachodnią, Bollywood, a nawet K-popem. Alcazar wyraźnie kieruje się zasadą „idź na całość lub idź do domu”. Oczywiście tajlandzkie kabarety słyną także z katoey (co w wolnym tłumaczeniu oznacza lady-boys i tutaj określenie to zostało użyte z szacunkiem). A sam spektakl robi do tego wiele aluzji.

After the show (that lasts about 2 hours) is over the performers go outside and there is a (paid) opportunity to take pictures with them.

Po zakończeniu przedstawienia (trwającego około 2 godzin) artyści wychodzą na zewnątrz i istnieje możliwość (odpłatnie) zrobienia sobie z nimi zdjęcia.

Viharn Sien

A hidden gem just outside of Pattaya, Viharn Sien (Viharnra Sien) is often overlooked by tourists. Also known as the Anek Kusala Sala (Dan Fu Yuan)[, it is a museum hosted in the former temple that houses an impressive collection of Chinese arts and various artefacts. The museum was built in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a great admirer of Chinese art.

We enter through a big Chinese gate with a red tiled roof, golden dragons and signs of yin and yang. From here, the museum looks like a Chinese palace.

Położone około pół godziny samochodem od Pattayi Muzeum Viharn Sien jest często pomijane przez turystów. Znane również jako Anek Kusala Sala lub Dan Fu Yuan, miejsce to zawiera imponującą kolekcję chińskiej sztuki i innych artefaktów. Muzeum zostało zbudowane w 1987 roku z okazji 60. urodzin króla Bhumibol Adulyadej, wielkiego miłośnika sztuki chińskiej.

Na teren dawnej świątyni wchodzimy przez chińską bramę z dachem z czerwonej dachówki, złotymi smokami po flankach oraz znakami yin i yang na drzwiach. Z tego miejsca muzeum przypomina typowy kompleks pałacowy, otoczony murem.

Before we enter the main building, we can see a number of mythological protagonists, and they seem to be more incredible than even Marvel’s heroes. There are also two giant Pekin lions carved in stone and statues of various monks.

Zanim wejdziemy do głównego budynku, możemy zobaczyć szereg mitologicznych bohaterów, którzy nie wydawaliby się nie na miejscu w komiksach Marvela. Są też dwa gigantyczne lwy pekińskie wyrzeźbione w kamieniu i posągi różnych mnichów.

The main building of the museum is three-story tall and quite spacious. The museum’s main hall is a replica of the Hall of Mental Cultivation in Beijing’s Forbidden City and houses a stunning collection of porcelain and bronze sculptures.

One of the most impressive exhibits in the museum is the collection of over 300 terracotta warrior replicas and horses, which are arranged in rows just like the actual terracotta warriors in China. There are even seven real Terra Cotta warriors on display, too. This is one of few places outside of China where you can see it. Other exhibits include jade carvings, antique furniture, and ancient Chinese weapons.

Główny budynek muzeum ma trzy piętra i jest bardzo rozległy. Najważniejsza sala muzeum jest repliką Sali Kulturowej w Zakazanym Mieście w Pekinie i zawiera imponującą kolekcję porcelany i rzeźb z brązu.  

Jedną z wyróżniających się ekspozycji muzeum jest kolekcja ponad 300 replik wojowników terakotowych, ustawionych w rzędach tak jak prawdziwi wojownicy terakotowi w Chinach. Siedem figurek to podobno nawet oryginały. Pattaya to jedno z niewielu miejsc poza Chinami, gdzie można to obejrzeć. Inne eksponaty obejmują rzeźby z jadeitu, antyczne meble i starożytną chińską broń.

Budda Mountain

This morning we grab a taxi and visit the famous Buddha Mountain – one of the largest Buddha images in the world. The image (130 x 70m) is carved on a tall mountain and inlaid with gold leaf. The viewpoint we arrived at is set at the beautifully landscaped gardens, and there are some open pavilions and shrines with Buddha statues. It is scorching hot today, so we rest for a moment in the shadows of trees before we go to our next destination.

Dziś rano łapiemy taksówkę i zwiedzamy słynną Górę Buddy – jeden z największych wizerunków Buddy na świecie. Portret Buddy (130 x 70 m) jest wyrzeźbiony na zboczu góry i inkrustowany złotem. Punkt widokowy, do którego dotarliśmy, znajduje się w pięknie zaprojektowanych ogrodach; jest tam także a kilka otwartych pawilonów i świątyń z posągami Buddy. Dziś jest wyjątkowo gorąco, więc chwilę odpoczywamy sobie w cieniu drzew, zanim wyruszymy w dalszą drogę.

Sea at night

 I guess I will never get used to the fact that in Thailand sea water is warm, even in the late evening or at dawn. It is nice to paddle a little before going to bed.

Chyba nigdy się nie przyzwyczaję do tego, że w Tajlandii woda w morzu jest ciepła, nawet późnym wieczorem czy o świcie. Miło jest trochę pomoczyć stopy przed pójściem spać.
