Cliffhanger

Temperature-wise, the weather was maybe not too bad, but the promise of rain was lingering in the air. And so we decided a short walk alongside a beach (not too far from the car so that we could run to the safety, or rather dry-ety, relatively quickly) and a good lunch would make this afternoon. Highcliffe was chosen as the destination point with its gloriously located Cliffhanger restaurant as a source of food (you know us, any trip is a good excuse to pack the food in our belies…). We had hot chocolate and beer (not too difficult to guess who got what, is it?) and a big bowl of mussels each, followed by cake and tea/coffee. Next time we will try to walk all the way from here to the Highcliffe Castle and back.

Jak chodzi o temperaturę, to pogoda może nie była najgorsza, ale zapowiedź deszczu zdecydowanie wisiała w powietrzu. Zdecydowaliśmy się więc na krótki spacer wzdłuż plaży (niezbyt daleko od samochodu, żeby w miarę potrzeby móc szybko dobiec w suche miejsce) i - rzecz jasna - lunch. Jako cel dzisiejszej wyprawy wybraliśmy Highcliffe ze wspaniale położoną restauracją Cliffhanger jako główną atrakcją dnia (jeśli nas już chwilę czytacie, to wiecie,  że każda wyprawa to dobry pretekst, by jeść…). W Cliffhanger wzięliśmy gorącą czekoladę i piwo (nietrudno chyba zgadnąć, kto co zamówil) i dużą miskę muszelek każdy, a następnie ciasto i herbatę / kawę. Przy następnej wizycie spróbujemy przejść całą drogę stad do zameczku Highcliffe i z powrotem. 

Jane Austne's House

Jane Austen is one of the most famous and beloved English writers, and there are not so many people in Europe for whom titles such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, or Emma remain unknown. As COVID restrictions still make it difficult to travel far away, we decided to revisit Chawton, this time to see a cottage that belonged to the famous (if not properly acknowledge during her life) author. 

Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, was her final home, where she spent the last (and very productive) years of her life. And yes, you may remember another entry to my blog about the Chawton House, a much bigger manor house which belonged to her brother Edward, adopted by the Knight family. Scroll down the blog, and you will find it if you are interested. 

But it was this smaller house that belonged to Jane and her mother, where she wrote her most famous novels. Jane lived in this house for eight years, and she left it only in May 1817, when she had to seek medical treatment in Winchester, where unfortunately she died two months later.

Jane Austen to jedna z najbardziej znanych i lubianych angielskich pisarek, a w Europie nie ma zbyt wielu osób, dla których tytuły, takie jak Rozważna i Romantyczna, Duma i Uprzedzenie, Mansfield Park czy Emma pozostają nieznane. Ponieważ ograniczenia COVID nadal utrudniają dalekie podróże, postanowiliśmy ponownie odwiedzić Chawton, tym razem, aby zobaczyć dom należący do słynnej (chociaż nie docenionej za życia) autorki.

 Chawton był ostatnim domem Jane Austin, to w nim spędziła ostatnie (i bardzo produktywne) lata swojego życia. Być może pamiętacie inny wpis na moim blogu o Chawton House, znacznie większym dworku należącym do jej brata Edwarda, zaadoptowanego przez rodzinę Knight. Przewińcie trochę bloga, a znajdziecie ten post, jeśli jesteście zainteresowany.

Ale to w tym mniejszym domu,  należałcym do Jane i jej matki, autorka dokończyła swoje najsłynniejsze powieści. Jane mieszkała w tym domu przez osiem lat, a opuściła go dopiero w maju 1817 roku, kiedy musiała szukać pomocy medycznej w Winchester, gdzie niestety zmarła dwa miesiące później.

Żeby za dużo nie gadać, resztę niech opowiedzą zdjęcia domu i ogrodu. 

Across from the house, on the corner of the street we noticed some lovely tearooms and - you know us by now - of course we went in for a treat. And treat it was. My chocolate croissant was extremely delicious. Add to this a cup of Earl Grey tea and what else may you need to finish the day beautifully…

Naprzeciwko domu, na rogu ulicy, zauważyliśmy uroczą herbaciarnę i - już nas znacie pod tym względem - oczywiście weszliśmy w poszukiwaniu łakoci. I łakocie znaleźliśmy. Mój czekoladowy rogalik był wyjątkowo pyszny. Dodać do tego filiżankę herbaty Earl Grey i czego jeszcze można chcieć, aby pięknie zakończyć dzień…

Chawton House and garden

As COVID restrictions are a bit weaker nowadays, we decided to explore some places in our area we have not visited before. This Sunday, it was the Chawton house, over four hundred years old mansion in the Hampshire area. It was built by the Knight family in 1580, and according to their website, “the house’s most famous association is with Jane Austen, whose brother Edward, inherited the house when distant family members Thomas and Catherine Knight, made him their heir. Edward offered the bailiff’s residence, five minutes’ walk from Chawton House, to his mother and sisters, Jane and Cassandra, and it was there, now the Jane Austen’s House Museum, where Jane enjoyed the most prolific period of her writing life.”

Apart from many features related to Jane Austen and the Knight family, the house also is famous for portraits of women writers, many of them well known in their day, as well as the outstanding library, which main collection focuses on women’s literature during the period 1600-1830.

Restrykcje związane z COVID-em są obecnie w UK nieco słabsze, a my przesiedzieliśmy w domu ładnych kilka miesięcy, wiec zdecydowaliśmy, że przy barku opcji porządnych wakacji, zrobimy kila weekendowych wypadów do miejsc w naszej okolicy, których wcześniej nie odwiedziliśmy. W tę niedzielę był to dom Chawton, ponad czterystuletnia rezydencja w rejonie Hampshire. Dom został zbudowany przez rodzinę Knight w 1580 roku, a według ich strony internetowej „najsłynniejszym jego skojarzeniem jest Jane Austen, której brat Edward odziedziczył dom, gdy dalecy członkowie rodziny, Thomas i Catherine Knight, uczynili go swoim spadkobiercą. Edward kupił swojej matce i siostrom, Jane i Cassandrze, rezydencję pięć minut spacerem od Chawton House - obecnie Jane Austen’s House Museum.  Jane cieszyła się tu najbardziej płodnym okresem w jej pisarskim życiu ”.

Oprócz wielu eksponatów związanych z Jane Austen i rodziną Knight, dom słynie również z portretów pisarek, wielu z nich już dobrze znanych w swoim czasie, a także z wybitnej biblioteki, której główny zbiór koncentruje się na literaturze kobiecej z lat 1600-1830.  

We had a really nice, lazy stroll through the house, and then through the walled garden, before ordering a take-away lunch (with cream tea) and having it in the park belonging to the estate.

Po obejrzeniu domu i spacerze po ogrodzie, zamówiliśmy sobie lunch na wynos – w końcu cream tea jest największą motywacją Marcina do zwiedzania.
