Cooling down

It is an especially hot day today, even for Marrakesh, so after our visit to the Gueliz we decided to cool down in the plunge pool on the roof. The benefit of a small riad is that there is a huge chance you will have facilities all to yourself. Today is no exception. It is just us and birds, and muezzins’ call for prayer from the mosques nearby.

Dziś jest wyjątkowo gorący dzień, nawet jak na Marrakesz, więc po wizycie w Gueliz postanowiliśmy ochłodzić się w basenie na dachu. Jedną z zalet małego riadu jest to, że istnieje ogromna szansa, iż będziesz mieć miejsca publiczne tylko dla siebie. I dzisiaj nie ma pod tym względem wyjątku. Na tarasie jesteśmy tylko my, i slychać jedynie ptaki i wołanie muezinów zapraszające do modlitwy.

An attempt to use feet as a tripod was not exactly a success.

Próba użycia stóp jako statywu, niestety nie zakończyła się sukcesem.

Museum of Marrakesh

Our next destination is the Dar Mnebhi palace from the late nineteenth century, a great example of classical Andalusian architecture, housing the Museum of Marrakesh.

Po lunchu kierujemy się do pałacu Dar Mnebhi z końca XIX wieku, wspaniałego przykładu klasycznej architektury andaluzyjskiej, w którym mieści się Muzeum Marakeszu.

First, we go to see a beautiful smaller traditional courtyard.  Rooms around this courtyard contain the museum’s collection of paintings.

Najpierw idziemy zobaczyć piękny, mniejszy, tradycyjny dziedziniec. Pomieszczenia wokół tego dziedzińca zawierają kolekcję malarstwa.

More paintings are presented in the old hammam and kitchen.

Kolejne obrazy są wystawione w starej łaźni tureckiej i kuchni.

The most impressive part of this building is a massive patio with a magnificent brass chandelier adorned with ornate geometric and arabesque motifs.  Nowadays fully paved and roofed over; in the past, it used to be an open garden planted with trees and flowers. The patio has a few fountains and is decorated with zelliij (zellige) tilework, stained glass and carved cedar wood.

Najbardziej imponującą częścią budynku jest ogromne patio ze wspaniałym mosiężnym żyrandolem ozdobionym bogatymi motywami geometrycznymi i arabeskowymi. Obecnie patio ma położoną mozaikową  podłogę i jest zadaszone, w przeszłości znajdował sie tutaj otwarty ogród obsadzony drzewami i kwiatami. Patio posiada kilka fontann i jest ozdobione kafelkami zelliij (zellige), witrażami i rzeźbionym drewnem cedrowym.

The rooms around the courtyards, some adorned with beautiful stucco and wood decorations, are filled with weapons, clothes, pottery and other traditional Moroccan objects.

Pokoje wokół dziedzińców, niektóre ozdobione pięknymi dekoracjami stiukowymi i drewnianymi, są wypełnione bronią, ubraniami, ceramiką i innymi tradycyjnymi przedmiotami.

Dar Cherifa

In the heart of the souks of the Mouassine neighbourhood, we find hidden in one of the narrow alleys a real gem of the Saadian era – the impressive Dar Cherifa.  It is a late 16th-century house beautifully restored and used nowadays as a café, restaurant, and art gallery. The place is simply splendid, and as we cool down from the oppressive heat outside, we admire its charming, full-of-character interior contrasting bare untouched walls with sophisticated original craftsmanship of stucco carvings.

W samym sercu suków, w dzielnicy Mouassine, znajdujemy prawdziwą perełkę epoki Saadytów ukrytą w jednej z wąskich uliczek medyny– Dar Cherifa. Jest to pięknie odrestaurowany dom z końca XVI wieku, który obecnie służy jako kawiarnia, restauracja i galeria sztuki. Wchodząc z dokuczliwego upału na zewnątrz do miłego chłodu tego riadu, podziwiamy jego urocze, pełne charakteru wnętrze - nagie ściany w kolorze głębokiej ochry kontrastujące pięknie z wyrafinowanym kunsztem stiukowych zdobień.

The house has two floors arranged around a deep central patio. Four sets of three pillars - one at each courtyard corner - form a shallow gallery around it. The spaces between the pillars of the same cluster are covered by small round arches and stucco decorations. The more significant gaps between the groups of pillars are connected by corbelled arches comprising intricately carved cedar wood lintels.

On two opposing sides of the courtyard, these arches are positioned at a considerable height, providing an unobstructed sight of the grand, elaborate doorways lead to the surrounding rooms. The elevated entrances leading from the courtyard are accentuated with additional stucco ornamentation positioned above the arch. This includes three decorative pseudo windows that are intricately carved with geometric designs, placed within multiple rectangular borders filled with various arabesque or Kufic patterns.

Dar Charifa ma dwa piętra rozmieszczone wokół głębokiego centralnego patio. Cztery zestawy trzech filarów - po jednym na każdym rogu dziedzińca - tworzą wokół niego płytką galerię. Przestrzenie między filarami każdego takiego skupiska kolumn są pokryte małymi okrągłymi łukami i dekoracjami sztukatorskimi. Większe przerwy między grupami filarów są połączone łukami wspornikowymi zawierającymi misternie rzeźbione nadproża z drewna cedrowego.

Po dwóch przeciwległych stronach dziedzińca łuki te są umieszczone na znacznej wysokości, zapewniając niezakłócony widok na wielkie, imponujące drzwi prowadzące do otaczających pomieszczeń. Podwyższone wejścia od strony dziedzińca zaakcentowane są dodatkową dekoracją sztukatorską umieszczoną nad łukiem. Obejmuje to trzy ozdobne pseudookna, które są misternie wyrzeźbione w geometryczne wzory, umieszczone w wielu prostokątnych obramowaniach wypełnionych różnymi arabeskami lub wzorami kufickimi.

The service is top-notch, too. The menu offers a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes, and I decide on chicken couscous whilst Marcin orders seafood pastilla with monkfish. Plus we take tea, coffee and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Everything is delicious.

Obsługa też na najwyższym poziomie. Menu oferuje różnorodne tradycyjne marokańskie dania, z czego ja decyduję się na kuskus z kurczakiem, a Marcin pastillę z owocami morza. Do tego herbata, kawa i świeżo wyciskany sok z cytryny. Wszystko jest pyszne.

The manager is extremely friendly and helpful (in a good way, not intrusive) and takes us up and around the place, including its lovely rooftop terrace. He also notices Marcin is a bit sleepy at some point and brings a huge fan to cool him down on a sofa, where he is invited to have a short nap!

Menadżer jest niezwykle przyjazny i pomocny (ale nie nachalny) i oprowadza nas po całym budynku, włącznie z tarasem na dachu. Zauważa też, że Marcin jest w pewnym momencie trochę śpiący i przynosi mu ogromny wentylator, żeby się ochłodził na sofie, gdzie zostaje zaproszony na krótką drzemkę!

Musee de la Musique

From Le Jardin Secret, we backtrack a little to the Mouassine district to find the Musee de Mouassine, also known as Musee de la Musique. The museum is tucked away next to the south-eastern corner of the Mouassine Mosque, along Derb el Hammam. It takes us a moment to find it, and we must go through a passage with a very low ceiling.

Z Le Jardin Secret cofamy się trochę do dzielnicy Mouassine, aby znaleźć Musee de Mouassine, znane również jako Musee de la Musique. Muzeum jest schowane obok południowo-wschodniego rogu meczetu Mouassine, przy Derb el Hammam. Znalezienie go zajmuje nam chwilę, zwłaszcza, że musimy przejść przez przejście z bardzo niskim sufitem, co wygląda jakbyśmy się pakowali komuś w jego rozwalające się podwórko.

The architecture of this place itself makes it worth a visit, but the display is also interesting, telling visitors about the diversity of music in Morocco and its multiple Andalusian, Berber and African heritages.

Sama architektura tego miejsca sprawia, że warto je odwiedzić, ale eksponaty są również interesujące, opowiadając odwiedzającym o różnorodności muzyki w Maroku i jego wielorakim dziedzictwie: andaluzyjskim, berberyjskim i afrykańskim.

The museum is hosted in a beautiful XVI-century Saadian house carefully renovated to its former glory.

Muzeum mieści się w pięknym XVI-wiecznym domu Saadytów, starannie odrestaurowanym do swojej dawnej świetności.

The house contains a first-floor douiria (guest apartment). Its reception room with amazingly colourful wood carvings and a central skylight belongs to the best we have seen in Marrakesh.

Na pierwszym piętrze domu znajduje się douiria - mieszkanie dla gości. Jego główny pokój z kolorowymi rzeźbami w drewnie i z centralnym świetlikiem należy do najlepszych historycznych wnętrz, jakie widzieliśmy w Marrakeszu.

There is also a nice rooftop café here, with so many cute seating areas that I do not know which one to choose. Eventually, we stay on the highest terrace, listening to the muezzins calling for prayers whilst tasting mint tea (or, in Marcin’s case, coffee).

Jest tu także ładna kawiarnia na dachu,  z tak wieloma uroczymi miejscami do siedzenia, że nie wiem, który zakątek wybrać. Ostatecznie zostajemy na najwyższym tarasie, słuchając muezzinów nawołujących do modlitwy i degustując herbatę miętową (a w przypadku Marcina kawę).

Riad breakfast

When we get up, a delicious breakfast is already waiting for us – various forms of Moroccan bread, cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, jams and honey, fruit and, most importantly, still boiling shakshuka. Obviously, sweet mint tea and coffee are also offered, as well as orange juice.  Even though the temperature is already high, the riad is pleasantly cool, so it is a perfect start to a day.

Kiedy wstajemy, czeka już na nas pyszne śniadanie – różne formy marokańskiego chleba, ser, pomidory, ogórek, dżemy i miód, owoce i, co najważniejsze, jeszcze wrząca shakshuka. Oczywiście oferowana jest również słodka miętowa marokańska herbata i kawa, a także sok pomarańczowy. Mimo, że temperatura jest już wysoka, w riadzie jest przyjemnie chłodno, więc jest to idealny początek dnia.
